When well tuned, and started according to the book, all small engines will start on the first pull - even this machine with a very heavy start up load due to the heavy weight of the chipper shredder device attached to the engine crankshaft. Note the wind pressure in intake and throw out vents yet the relatively low speed of the engine. To acheive the same from a smaller engine, one would need higher speed (legal limit is 3600 rpm) but it will surely slow down the engine once you are loading it with leaves or branches. Therefore, higher the engine power with a slightly higher initial purchase price, quicker and better the job is done. The ability of an engine to quickly come to steady operation depends upon it quickly warming up and the remaining engine components being in good condition too. The Stihl BG 85 leaf blower is one of Stihl's top of the line models. Some even consider it commercial grade - but all those homeowners with big yards, or lots of leaves to move, would have it no other way.

Here is a short summary of opinions given by lovers (owners) of this Stihl leaf blower.

Just about everyone comments and raves about its power. Unmatchable with any leaf blower anyone ever owned. It out powered Craftsmans, Ryobis, Toros and more. And, in one instance, although the statistics of Stihl's air movement or velocity are only slightly better than these other models, the leaf blowing was done in 20% of the time with less effort.

Owners liked the ability to not have to walk into the sticky branches or walk into their gardens to blow their leaves. It was quite powerful to do these things from a distance. Additionally, gutter extension attachments can be purchased so you don't have to go on the roof to clean your gutters. You can do it from the sidewalk.

Many comments were made about how ergonomically designed and balanced it was. Although it weighs less than 9 lbs, many thought this was quite acceptable - unless you have a super large yard to do. One fellow carried an Echo around the store for a while and then carried the Stihl around for comparison. He commented that he couldn't believe the difference between the two.

Others have noted the extra long tubes (and tips) that come with it. These were obviously well liked since they eliminate stooping when doing the work and the extra tips (with different shapes) provide for improved "impact blowing".

Other features that were well liked were: the easy carburetor adjustment and easy start. Almost everyone commented about how it easy it starts after a few pulls. It also has a "cruise control" to control and lock in air flow and comes with small rubber feet to keep it from walking away if you set it down to do something.

Another very popular option (costs extra) is the vacuum attachment (and shredder blade). Owners were impressed with how easily the leaf blower converts into a highly effective vacuum/shredder which vacuums and shreds leaves, (wet and or dry) sticks, and nuts. A one bushel leaf attachment bag comes with it. Many were impressed with how well it handled the wet leaves - their other brands certainly couldn't do it.

All in all, this Stihl leaf blower is high quality, durable and meant to last years. While it is top of the line, and offers many wonderful features, the basics are the same across the entire line of leaf blowers. As with other things, you get what you pay for. You simply can't go wrong with a Stihl.

Some trimmers are equipped with devices to feed the nylon line. As the line may snap during use, a feeding mechanism avoids interruption. Smaller, electric models are useful for removing small to medium-sized branches and help fell small-stemmed or young trees.

First of all let look at the differences between them. Lawn vacuums or sweepers, as they are sometimes called, come in three varieties; hand powered, powered (gas or electricity) and towed. Leaf blowers come as only gas or electricity powered.

In essence although they are both to collect up unwanted leaves they each go about it in a very different way. The lawn sweepers, as the name suggests, is effectively a rotating brush that passes over the lawn and sweeps debris in to the collect bag. The leaf blower passes blows leaves and debris in to a manageable pile for you to do something with.

You may think - well no thoughts required here, I'll get a leaf sweeper - it takes a step out of the whole leaf collection process. With the blower I have to walk all over my lawn only to then have to pick the leaves up in the end, whereas with the lawn sweeper I can walk over my lawn with it and it collects the leaves in a bag which I can then neatly empty to wherever I choose. To a certain extent you would be right to think this, but then it really does depend upon the style and size of your lawn. For examples, there will be some lawns that are a very awkward shape that has a lot of nooks and crannies. It would be very difficult to get the lawn sweeper in to all of these and perhaps the leaf blower would be a better option.

Many leaf blowers have one function and that is to blow leaves, lawn sweepers can have many functions and uses. Not only can they be used for collecting leaves but you can also use them on your patio, driveway or any other surface that has debris on that you may want to collect. Some lawn sweepers also have a shredding facility; this is great if you want to create leaf mould or mulch for your garden. The shredding facility does have draw back though - you are not going to be able to use your vacuum on any other surface than grass. The shredder will not last long picking up grit of the driveway.

In terms of which is best for you, you need to look at the shape of your lawn, consider how much leaf fall you get and if you regularly sweep other non-grass surfaces.

If you are serious about clearing a large area of bushes and trees, or are a landscaping contractor or employee then you will most likely need the services of a large industrial chipper shredder.  These mammoths of the chipping world will hack, thresh and chew their way through and endless stream of waste orchad materials, big or small.

The most coarse use for these chipper shredders will be to allow landscapers to clear large areas of bushes and trees.  The branches, limbs and trunks are all cut down and then fed into the auto feeder part of the chipper shredder which then pulls the items through, cutting them into smaller pieces and passing them through the yield shoot into what ever Storage gadget you like.  The yield can be pumped directly into a skip or lorry to be taken away or smaller amounts can be fed directly into a bag Storage or wheelbarrow for disposal.  The hopper on an industrial unit, the part that the branches and waste is fed into, will be large sufficient to handle whole branches from a mature tree.  Smaller home shredders are not suited to this estimate of waste being passed through and can only accept branches of a smaller diameter.

Industrial wood chippers and shredders are ordinarily able to be towed by a car or truck and are ordinarily run from a generator or the larger models from their own on board petrol or diesel driven engine.  Some chippers are also able to take power from a compatible tractor engine if one is colse to or is towing the unit.
